Wigan Warriors have bolstered their claim to be the greatest rugby league side of the modern era with victory in the Super League Grand Final at the weekend. The win crowns a historic quadruple – the first clean sweep in a calendar year since the establishment of the Super League. In 2024 Wigan have won the World Club Championship, the Challenge Cup, the League Leaders’ Shield and now, the Grand Final.
Clad in their iconic Kappa cherry and white kit, Wigan overcame a resilient Hull KR side 9-2 in the Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday night. Wigan talisman Bevan French grabbed the game’s only try, with Adam Keighran and Harry Smith contributing a penalty and drop-goal respectively. This was also the first back-to-back Super League Grand Final win in the club’s history.
The Warriors were led by coach Matt Peet who, in his three years of the club, has seen his side lift no fewer than seven trophies. For Saturday’s clash, Peet enlisted Old Trafford legend Sir Alex Ferguson to give a pre-match team talk. The coach commented:
“We just thought we were on the verge of doing something similar to when United won the treble in 1999 and our challenge at the moment is continuing our success.”
Peet’s achievements so far mean that comparisons will now, inevitably, be made to the dynasty that Ferguson established at Manchester United and what could lie ahead for Wigan.
In the meantime, anticipation will build towards March 2025, when Wigan’s Betfred Super League clash with Warrington Wolves will take place in Las Vegas at the 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium, home of the city’s Raiders NFL team.
All of us at Kappa are proud to be associated with Wigan Warriors and send our congratulations to the club for their magnificent achievements in 2024.
